The Divine Contradiction of Artificial Intelligence
Pope Francis's recent calls for artificial intelligence that "centres humanity" ring with moral clarity, yet they expose a profound contradiction at the heart of the global AI revolution. While the Vatican articulates lofty principles about technology serving the common good, the reality on the ground across Africa reveals a different truth: the continent that provides the raw materials and human labour powering AI remains systematically excluded from its benefits. This is not merely an oversight or unfortunate externality. It is the foundational logic upon which the entire AI empire operates.
The Democratic Republic of Congo's cobalt mines tell the most visceral part of this story. Children and adults labour in dangerous conditions to extract the minerals essential for the batteries and semiconductors that power AI data centres worldwide. Meanwhile, in Nairobi's digital sweatshops, young Kenyans spend their days training AI models for Western companies, meticulously labelling images and moderating content for algorithms that will eventually replace their jobs. This pattern of extraction, first of resources, then of labour, and ultimately of economic opportunity, represents a digital colonialism that mirrors the historical exploitation of African wealth and human capital.
The geographic concentration of AI benefits reveals the calculated nature of this system. While Silicon Valley venture capitalists and Chinese tech giants accumulate unprecedented wealth from AI innovations, African universities struggle to access the computational resources necessary for meaningful AI research. The bandwidth costs alone for training large language models exceed the annual GDP of many African nations, creating technological barriers that are simultaneously economic and geopolitical. When Pope Francis speaks of AI serving humanity, the implicit question becomes: which portion of humanity, and at whose expense?
Yet Africa's relationship with AI need not remain one of perpetual extraction and exclusion. The continent's young, digitally native population represents an enormous reservoir of talent and innovation potential. Countries like Rwanda and Ghana are already positioning themselves as regional AI hubs, while South African researchers contribute meaningfully to machine learning advances. The challenge lies not in capability but in creating economic and technological sovereignty, ensuring that African innovations serve African development priorities rather than merely feeding global supply chains.
The Pope's moral framework for AI actually demands something more radical than current industry leaders are prepared to consider. True human-centred AI would require fundamental restructuring of global technology supply chains, equitable sharing of AI's economic benefits, and genuine partnership rather than extraction in AI development. It would mean African countries controlling their own data and digital infrastructure, rather than serving as passive sources of training data for algorithms developed elsewhere. The Vatican's call for AI that serves the common good becomes meaningful only when "common" truly includes the Global South as equal stakeholders rather than exploited resources.
The cruel irony is that AI's promise of abundance and efficiency could theoretically eliminate the scarcity that justifies current patterns of exploitation. But realizing that potential requires confronting the uncomfortable truth that the AI empire's current architecture depends on maintaining Africa in a position of technological dependency. Until this fundamental contradiction is resolved, papal pronouncements about human-centred AI will remain beautiful words describing an impossible world, one where justice and artificial intelligence can coexist without dismantling the very systems that make AI profitable for those who control it.
